The Mysterious Mistresses of Mormon Lake Lodge

In Book 4 of the ‘Sally the Loner Mysterious Misadventures Series’, Sally meets the Mysterious Mistresses of Mormon Lake Lodge

What inspired this story?

Mormon Lake Lodge is nestled deep in the Ponderosa Pine forests of Arizona. At 7,247 feet, plus or minus; depending on where you take the reading.

The village and lodge are on the west side of the largest natural lake in Arizona. The lake is about 10 miles long by 2 miles wide. And is more dry than wet most of the time.

Mormon Lake and the Coconino National Forest are the weekend playgrounds for cooked Phoenicians and hunters.

That said, this story built itself from a horrific event that happened well before Sally’s time there. The event was the death of a gal named Mary. The story goes that she was dancing on a table. She fell off and died.

Mary’s ghost has since become the recipient of all the blame for whatever goes awry in the steakhouse and saloon. She turns the jukebox on when no one is there. She breaks dishes. She hides tools and equipment. And yada, yada, yada. She’s a busy spook.

Mary is a character that lives on through unexplainable happenings at Mormon Lake Lodge.

In this story, Mary is joined by Jeanie. Their names have been changed because the story is fiction.

Jeanie grew up at Mormon Lake. She worked throughout Mormon Lake Lodge. Her uncle owned the place for a time. She had a special stool at the bar where she unwound after work and caught up with the locals.

There’s a plaque next to the door in the store that honors Jeanie for 43 years of working throughout the lodge. It was awarded to her sometime in the 70’s. But Jeanie continued to work at the lodge for about 30 more years. She met her maker on her way to work one wintry morning. I miss her.

This story is my way of honoring Jeanie. A grand and commanding lady. She was a joy to work with. And not a person to rile.
