The Cowpoke’s Revenge

An ornery old cowpoke is released from a 15-year prison sentence . He was convicted of killing the gambler who fleeced him of his month’s pay. It was a private game in the bunkhouse of a neighboring ranch.

None of the other players saw the killing… but not one missed the sparks flying when the old cowpoke realized he’d been fleeced. And gladly lined up to report it. Nobody liked the old cowpoke. He was mean, mouthy, arrogant, and bossy. It was fine with his cohorts that he was found guilty on total circumstantial evidence.

His time served, he returned to his own ranch from prison just as ornery and arrogant as ever. And let it be known he is seeking revenge.

Townspeople who testified against him started dropping like flies. But nobody saw a thing. The old cowpoke was always home alone when the murders happened. He had no viable alibi for any of the murders. Except his new cow dog, Rusty, and the other ranch animals. His horse, the pigs, the chickens, the cats, the sheep, and the few head of cattle that he was beginning his new herd with.

He was about to be convicted a second time for multiple murders. The conviction was based on nothing but circumstantial evidence. At that moment, Rodney’s business card landed in his attorney’s hands. Madeline put it there. She was on her way to a pending case when she broke down in the cowtown. She believed the old cowpoke. And knew how to help.

Several ranchers had tried to steal the old cowpoke’s ranch while he was incarcerated. But they were not successful. The banker was the most adamant that he would have the place. He knew what was buried underground. But he didn’t know it all…

He’d set Dusty up the first time. He would do it again. But was he conniving alone?
